Is Magnesium Glycinate Safe?
Is it safe to take magnesium glycinate every day?
Magnesium glycinate is generally safe to take each day, even if your levels are adequate, as any excess will be excreted from your kidneys.
Before taking magnesium supplements, always speak with your medical professional as they can assess your medical history and inform you of any possibly interactions between any medications you’re taking and the magnesium, or any other supplement you’re looking to take. For example, don’t take magnesium if you’re taking certain antibiotics, medications for high blood pressure, medications that slow blood clotting and medications for diabetes.
If you take magnesium each day, make sure to not exceed 400 to 420mg per day for men and 320 to 360mg per day as this is the recommended daily dosage.
Men:
- 14 to 18 years old: 410mg per day
- 19 to 30 years old: 400mg per day
- 31 to 50 years old: 420mg per day
- 51 and above years old: 420mg per day
Women:
- 14 to 18 years old: 360mg per day
- 19 to 30 years old: 310mg per day
- 31 to 50 years old: 320mg per day
- 51 and above years old: 320mg per day
Magnesium glycinate side effects are less felt than other types of magnesium due to it being gentler on the stomach, with magnesium side effects possibly being an upset stomach, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Keep in mind that these side effects only really occur if you take excessive amounts of magnesium and you develop hypermagnesemia, or magnesium toxicity.
If you’re experiencing any side effects from taking magnesium glycinate, lower your dosage until your body starts getting used to it then slowly raise it to the dosage you’re targeting.

Is magnesium glycinate safe during pregnancy?
Yes, and pregnant women actually need more magnesium than normal when pregnant, but make sure to speak with your doctor before taking any supplements when pregnant. Compared to the recommended daily dosages for women above, when pregnant, the recommended dosages are:
- 14 to 18 years old: 400mg per day, 360mg when breastfeeding
- 19 to 30 years old: 350mg per day, 310mg when breastfeeding
- 31 to 50 years old: 360mg per day, 320mg when breastfeeding
Magnesium glycinate is the form of magnesium often recommended to pregnant women because of its high bioavailability, which makes it easier to absorb, and its gentler nature, which reduces the possibility of stomach problems. When taken at night, its high absorbability makes it an excellent sleep aid as well. Magnesium also aids in blood pressure regulation, gestational hypertension and leg cramps.
In pregnant women, magnesium supplements may cause bad bowel movements, such as diarrhea, which can then possibly lead to dehydration. Readily speak with your doctor if this happens as it can affect the amount of amniotic fluid you have.
