Safe Daily Magnesium Supplements: Dosage and Precautions

17th Oct 2023

Can I take magnesium daily?

Yes, it is generally considered safe to take a magnesium supplement daily, even if you have sufficient levels. Many modern diets are low in magnesium-rich foods, so supplements are recommended.

Stop taking magnesium daily when taking some antibiotics as well as bisphosphate, medications for high blood pressure, muscle relaxants, water pills, medications that slow blood clotting, digoxin, medications for diabetes, antacids, gabapentin, ketamine and sevelamer. Be sure to take to your doctor if this is you.

As for how much magnesium per day, about 400 to 420mg per day for men and 320 to 360mg per day is generally safe for most adults. So, about 200 to 400mg per day. Doses greater than this can potentially become unsafe, but this depends on your age, whether you’re pregnant or for what you’re trying to treat. There are studies that have found beneficial effects of magnesium when taking between 125 to 600mg per day.

Some symptoms of too much magnesium include an upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, while some serious side effects of magnesium build up can include an irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, confusion, slowed breathing, coma and even death.

Also, there are different types of magnesium, so it’s best to find out their differences and benefits and see which is right for you.
